Congratulations to our Science Olympiad Team!

Our Suzanne Science Olympiad Team placed 5th in the Science Olympiad Regional tournament held at Occidental College last Feb. 27, 2016. This win allowed our team to qualify for the State tournament held April 2, 2016 at California Institute of Technology (CALTECH) in Pasadena. The 15 - member team brought home 5 team medals from the State competition and 13 team medals from the Regional competition, as well as the 5th place plaque and trophy for the school.

This year’s competing team is composed of Anisha Bellur, Lynette Chan, Darren Chen, Kenneth Cher, Patrick Florendo, Daniel Knott, Katherine Lee, William Lin, Jenny Shen, Lenick Tan, Justin Tan, Amber Tsao, Louis Wong, Melody Yu, and Rongtian Yue. The team competed in 23 events against 40 Los Angeles area middle schools during the regional competition at Occidental College. With only 15 members allowed on a team, most team members competed in 3 or more events. Events have 2 or 3 team members studying and testing in specific areas such as anatomy and physiology, population growth, meteorology, and fossils, or designing and building elastic launch gliders, bottle rockets, bridges, and scramblers. Some events are both hands-on and application events like bio process lab, crime busters, food science, and experimental design.

During the State competition, our team competed with the best of the best Science Olympiad teams from Orange County, LA County, Inland Empire, and San Diego. It was the first time that the State competition was held at CALTECH. It was an amazing experience for our team members who put in a lot of work and dedication, and sacrificed their personal time in preparing for their events.

Prior to the regional and state competitions, our competing team (Team A), together with Suzanne’s Science Olympiad team-in-training (Team B), also competed in two invitational tournaments. The first one was held last Dec. 12 at Ladera Vista Junior High School in Fullerton, while the second one was held on Jan. 30 at Mesa Robles School in Hacienda Heights. Both of our teams invested a lot of time and energy to prepare for their events. And their hard work paid off! Our competing team continued Suzanne’s tradition of getting one of the top 6 coveted spots in regionals and moved to compete in the State competition. Our team-in-training ranked 2nd compared to the other training teams that competed at the Mesa Robles invitational.

Our 15 - member team-in-training is composed of Annabelle Chan, Charles Cheng, Alice Chou, Harris Daud, Andrea Florendo, Kayla Hao, Lina Huang, Matthew Jiang, Michelle Jiang, Allison Lin, Lewis Lui, Jonathan Steele, Deven Tseng, Joy Wang, and Liwen Xia.

We are proud of what our team accomplished! Congratulations Team A! We are looking forward to a strong team next year, Team B!

Great job Challengers!
